Separation and Divorce Coaching

Our Counsellors at Concordia Counselling are trained to work as Divorce Coaches and Child Specialists with clients in a Collaborative Divorce process, mediation process, in litigation or working through a separation by themselves.

Collaborative Divorce is an effective alternative to the traditional adversarial divorce and involves both partners working towards an agreement that is in everyone's best interests. A traditional Collaborative process is a team approach in which Collaborative lawyers, Therapists/Coaches and Financial Planners work together with families to help move from conflict to resolution.

Why use a Divorce Coach?

When a relationship ends, emotions run high. If you don't have emotional support, the strain of separation can feel overwhelming. Conflict with a spouse is not only painful, it can also slow negotiations and make legal costs soar.

Divorce Coaches create a safe, trust-based environment in which they help you:

  • Explore your emotions
  • Learn skills to shift communication from hurtful to constructive
  • Gain tools and resources to co-parent effectively
  • Set up a co-parenting plan that puts your kids first (see below)
  • Learn what your children need at different stages of their development
  • Create a workable plan for your family's future
Why use a Child Specialist?

The most harmful part of divorce for children is high levels of conflict and distress. Studies have found family conflict hurts children more than divorce or even parental death.

One effective way to protect your children from the damage of divorce is to include a Child Specialist on your Collaborative Team.

The Child Specialist focuses exclusively on your children, meeting with them and giving them a safe place to tell their story. After assessing your children's needs and concerns, the Child Specialist reports back to your team so that the children's best interests are considered.

Child Specialists can help:

  • Create a co-parenting plan
  • Give your children tools and strategies to navigate the transition
  • Provide you and your team with feedback on what's helping and not helping

In short, the Child Specialist goes to bat for your children. Hearing through a neutral person what your kids are going through can inspire and guide you to make decisions that truly are in their best interests.
